Off Valve? We Talk To The Experts — The Motorhood

BorgWarner's e-booster could eliminate turbo lag, making engines much more efficient without compromising on power. Outside of the rarefied air of supercar world, where Lamborghini still insists that naturally aspirated engines remain the most pure and Italian way to produce power, and noise, the days of building cars without turbochargers attached are coming to an end.

Many turbo systems are designed and installed on an individual basis by performance tuning shops (see Chapter 6). This is typically done on vehicles that can't take advantage of a pre-engineered, bolt-on kit from an aftermarket vendor. Lower compression does give slightly lower power off boost power, but no small capacity car is powerful at low rpm, so it's not a real issue.

For most people 500-600wheel in a turbo LS car in the 3000lb range is flat out scary, or awesome, depends on who you are. The density ratio chart plots air density as a function of compressor efficiency and pressure ratio. It's basic science, the more air and oxygen in the combustion chamber, the bigger the explosions of fuel, and bigger explosions create more engine power.

Make sure you run a restrictor so you don't put too much oil pressure in your turbo, which can make you leak oil between your turbo seals, or through your exhaust. While they both boost and help make your engine make more power, there is a difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger.

The company's turbo mix is expected to keep growing with the summer release of the 2018 GMC Terrain and ongoing production of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, the most recent vehicles to offer turbos exclusively. For turbocharged engines used primarily on budget ls the street and for road racing, a smaller aspect ratio on the exhaust side of the turbo delivers the best performance, as it promotes quicker spool-up and, consequently, more immediate power delivery.

Exducer Wheel: The portion of the turbine or compressor wheel where airflow exits it; on a turbine wheel, it is the minor” diameter section, while on the compressor wheel, it is the major” diameter section. The turbocharger is a smart piece of engineering. While certain auto enthusiasts like to argue that there's no replacement for displacement, turbocharging has long been a viable way to significantly increase engine performance.

There is no such thing as too much boost, just too much for YOUR engine and turbo. Compressor-wheel stall is important to avoid, as it puts unnecessary load on the turbo shafts and bearings, and reduces boost response between gear changes. When 15 psi doesn't equal 15 psi: Unless you're comparing identical turbos and engines, then stacking up your 15 psi against somebody else's doesn't mean much at all.

Most guys are just giving their cars hits off the lights and there aren't many places around that'll allow them to hold turbo set-ups flat-out where the snail will really hit its straps. What is true is that a turbocharged engine can achieve higher volumetric efficiency with stock ports and combustion chambers than a naturally aspirated engine with gazillion-dollar heads.

Lately, the hot ticket is to grab a 5.3L truck engine from the junkyard, change the cam and add a turbo, and you have the makings of one serious powerhouse. In many commercial diesel engines, turbos are applied without a wastegate. Every turbo system also needs some sort of wastegate or bypass valve, which redirects exhaust gases away from the turbo to regulate boost pressure.

By fitting a proper diameter, mandrel-bent (the diameter of the tube stays the same throughout the radius of the bend) system with a quality high-flow muffler and catalytic converter, you're eliminating these pressure bottlenecks and allowing the gasses to flow smoothly out of the tailpipe enabling your engine to develop more power.

Then, using compressor maps (see Chapter 5), determine the turbocharger that has your basic mass-flow and pressure ratio located right in the middle of its highest efficiency. TURBOCHARGER TYPES AND SELECTION HOW TO SUPERCHARGE AND TURBOCHARGE GM LS-SERIES ENGINES 37 spins, it spins an air compressor that blows fresh air into the engine's intake tract.
